Leonard Morin is a translator and interpreter with over twenty years experience. He is currently on staff as a Spanish interpreter at New York City Criminal Court and is also federally certified. Previously he worked as a freelance translator and interpreter. As an interpreter, he works in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight modes. He translates chiefly legal documents from Spanish, Dutch, and German into English.
Leonard is a published author of articles on language and the language services industry as well as Latin American-U.S. relations.
He holds a B.A. in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Columbia University, from which he graduated magna cum laude. At Columbia, he won the 2004 Antonio G. Mier prize for excellence in Spanish and a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement in the Study of German Language and Literature. He also holds a propedeuse degree in Dutch law from the Open universiteit. He served as president (2012-2014), secretary (2017), and chair of the nominating committee (2015-2023) of the New York Circle of Translators.
A native of Detroit, Leonard moved to Amsterdam with his family at age fourteen. There he attended the Amsterdam Montessori high school. In addition to living in the Netherlands for eight years, Leonard resided and studied in Ecuador for one year as an exchange student and spent several months in Germany. Besides Leonard’s formal studies of Dutch, German, and Spanish, he is an avid autodidact of languages, international relations, economics, and whatever else catches his interest.
